A major event in the Japanese automotive industry was the post-war progress from knockdown production to the development of a proper domestic manufacturing capability as a result of technological tie-ups with overseas vehicle makers. These tie-ups included those formed between Hino and Renault, Nissan and Austin, and Isuzu and Hillman. Hino signed an agreement with Renault in February 1953, and started assembling knockdown kits in April of the same year. However, the proportion of Japanese production increased from then until August 1958 when the entire production of the vehicle was brought inside Japan. Approximately 35,000 units of the PA were built by the time production ceased in 1963. In the first year of production, the price was an expensive 10,000 yen, but sales of the PA were excellent due to its economy (the Pa could run for 4 km on one cup of gasoline) and convenient size for owner-drivers. The PA can therefore be seen as one of the triggers of the explosive surge in motorization that followed. This tie-up was also beneficial from a technological standpoint. As a result, Japan acquired induction annealing, stamping and paint technologies, and other benefits.
