At the time, most passenger vehicles in Japan were based on trucks. However, in 1955, Toyota pioneered the first proper mass-production passenger vehicle based purely on domestic technology and featuring many new mechanisms, including a dedicated passenger vehicle chassis. The front axle utilized independent suspension with coil springs to improve ride comfort. This set up was already used by most foreign vehicles, but it led to rattling noises on Japan's poor roads. Taxi companies were therefore worried about its durability. At the rear of the car was a rigid axle with triple leaf springs. The car used an X shaped frame and suicide doors were employed at the rear to improve passenger ingress and egress. It received a rapturous welcome from the public as a purely Japanese vehicle in tune with the applications of the time due to factors such as its strength, supple ride, easy controllability at low speeds, and so on. Initially, the RS was sold as a passenger vehicle for general use, and the RR model (including leaf springs at the front as well as the rear) as a taxi. However, the RS also came to be used as a taxi, and production of the RR was stopped in November 1956.
