| A 100,000 km continuous high-speed driving test on the newly opened Meishin Expressway heralded the high performance and endurance of the Corona throughout the world. The sedan came in standard, deluxe and LP gas-powered versions. A range of commercial variants was available, and a torque converter was also offered. The commercial variants came in van and pick-up styles, with a wide pick-up variation with double seats also sold. After its release, the Corona became a popular model at home and abroad and broke the Japanese record for the number of registrations for a single model. After 1964, an increasing number of Coronas were exported, especially to the US. As a result, the scale of production of the Corona reached a level that could be judged by international standards. In fact, only Volkswagen produced more cars of a single model. It was also well reviewed by internationally respected specialist automotive magazines such as "Motor" and "Autocar". Style: the RT40 was styled to give the impression of speed and liveliness, with straight lines flowing from a peak above the front bumper to the rear. Performance: The RT40 Corona was around 60 kg lighter than the previous model, which, in combination with improvements to the engine, gave the RT40 performance levels on a par with international standards. Top speed was 140 km/h and the RT40 covered the SS 1/4 mile in 19.7 seconds. |
