| The culmination of Hino's rear-engined passenger vehicle development, the Contessa 1300 sedan and coupe drew kudos for its flowing and elegant styling by the Italian designer Michelotti. The coupe in particular won numerous awards, including international automobile concours d'elegance. Cooling is a major issue in large rear-engined vehicles. In the Contessa, this was solved by positioning a radiator in the rear, taking in the cooling air from the rear, and then expelling it below the car. The sedan was launched in September 1964, followed by the coupe in April 1965. By 1967, the two variants had sold around 55,000 units between them. The main differences in the coupe were a SU twin carburetor used to boost output, disc brakes on the front wheels (a first for a mass-produced Japanese vehicle), a 10% increase in the suspension spring constants that enabled the body to be set lower to the ground, and the location of the fuel tank. This was positioned behind the front trunk to optimize weight distribution and handling stability. |
