The genesis of the development of the R380 was the second Japanese Grand Prix, at which a Porsche had eventually convincingly beaten a selection of Prince Skylines.
The R380 was completed in 1964, and established a Japanese and E-Class world speed record in 1965 at the Yatabe Test Track. In 1966, the improved R380-1 model competed in the third Japanese Grand Prix, taking the overall title. An R380 also finished second.
Released in 1968, a new R381 model won the Japanese Grand Prix in the same year equipped with a Chevrolet 5.5-liter V8 engine. Two R382 models also came first and second in the 1969 Grand Prix using Prince’s own 6-liter V12 DOHC engine (output: 500 ps).
The R380-I shown in this picture (number 11) is the car driven by Yoshikazu Sunako that beat Porsche to the checkered flag at the third Japanese Grand Prix in 1966. |
