The hybrid system in the Harrier was its first application to an SUV by Toyota (the Harrier was released as the Lexus RX 400h in America and Europe). The hybrid system was an improved version of the THS II system installed in the second generation Prius. Use of the new SUV-oriented THS II and an E-Four system with substantially increased output enabled the performance of the Harrier to far surpass conventional gasoline engine vehicles. It also enabled smooth acceleration without needing to shift into top speed, and fuel efficiency similar to compact cars.
The motor output of the E-Four system that drives the rear wheels was improved and the Vehicle Dynamic Integrated Management (VIM) system was applied for the first time to a 4WD system.
