| Hiro Ohta, a business man involved in selling and repairing vehicles, completed his own first vehicle, the OS, as early as 1922. It was renowned for its high-speed engine, Zenith carburetor and magneto ignition system. The original model had an engine capacity of 965 cc, but this was later reduced to 748 cc. Ohta's son, Yuichi, took over responsibility for the body styling, coming up with a design that was well received and enabling 670 units of the OD to be produced. As with Datsun, the same chassis could be used as a truck, and an Ohta vehicle even overcame a Datsun at the Tamagawa Speedway. Development of the OD was backed by Mitsui Co., Ltd and full-scale machine tools, such as milling machines and Gleason gear cutters, were imported from overseas. A new factory was established at Omori and the company changed its name from Ohta Jidosha to Kosoku Kikan Kogyo. |
