1. The 2-stroke UD series engine had been manufactured by Nissan Diesel Motor Co., Ltd. since 1955, but its potential for lower emissions and noise reduction reached its limits. The PD6 (T) engine was developed to take the place of the UD6 type (240 ps) for 10 t vehicles.
2. This engine was based on the naturally aspirated PD6 type, and mounted a turbocharger manufactured by the US company, Garrett (the present Honeywell Turbocharging Systems). The injection pump was improved from the B type Bosch injection pump to the P type manufactured by Diesel Kiki Co., Ltd. (the present Bosch Automotive Systems Corp.), and injection pressure was further increased. The engine was well-received due to its excellent fuel economy and high reliability as well as small combustion noise. Therefore, it was also mounted in high speed tractors in addition to 10 t vehicles.
3. At that time the Tomei Expressway was opened, and the PD6 (T) was recognized as an engine that fulfilled the needs of the large scale long distance transport era. The engine overcame the thermal load problem which other companies experienced and could not solve with turbo supercharged pre-combustion chamber type engines. It was firmly established as an engine suitable for the new era, and a significant step was made toward the development of intercooled direct injection turbocharging engines.
4. The following basic structure of the base engine PD6 type was retained. The camshaft was laid out near the highest position of the cylinder block. The water pump was driven by gears. The thermostats were small and responsive. Three thermostats with different valve opening temperature were aligned in parallel for high reliability.
5. The increased thermal load caused by supercharging was solved by employing a barrel face double-sided keystone ring for the top ring and a taper ring for the second ring. The ring width was increased for better sealing performance, and the 3-ring piston structure, which was an advanced structure for a truck engine, was strictly retained. In addition, to improve the lubricating performance of the intake valves, the valve seat angle was changed from 45 degrees to 30 degrees, and helical grooves similar to those in the exhaust valves were provided in the bore of the valve guide.
6. Later advanced versions include the PE6T with a cylinder inner diameter expanded by 8 mm, the PE6TA with an intercooler, and the PE6TB, and it was further developed into a series of engines.

Points of interest, topicality:Japan's first direct injection turbo supercharged diesel engine released by Nissan Diesel Motor Co., Ltd. To replace the 2-stroke UD type series engine.
dot
Features:It combined a naturally-aspirated PD6 engine and a Garrett turbocharger, and adopted a Bosch PE-P type injection pump. It rivaled the engines from its competitors with an engine output of 191.2 kW (260 ps), which was the highest output for 10 t vehicle 6-cylinder engines at that time.
