This was the first heavy-duty truck engine in Japan to employ a unit injector. PM was dramatically reduced by using a twin valve control type unit injector with a maximum fuel injection pressure of 200 MPa. In addition, the world's first combination of a urea SCR system and a cooled EGR system achieved substantial NOx reduction. This engine conformed to the new long-term emissions regulations, which were said to be the severest in the world, one year before their enforcement in October 2005. Fuel efficiency was also improved. A comparison of vehicle running fuel efficiency shows an improvement of +10.5% with an EGR + DPF system, which conforms to the new short-term emission regulations and achieves ultra-low-PM emissions.
