At the time, urea SCR technology was used for fixed facilities such as de-nitration devices in thermal power plants, but it was not practically applied to automobiles because of the properties of urea solution, which is hard to handle due to issues surrounding freezing, crystallization, precipitation, and the like. Nissan Diesel Motor Co., Ltd. launched development of a urea SCR system for automobiles judging that NOx removal by urea SCR would maximize engine efficiency. In this system, high pressure fuel injection was adopted to reduce PM and improve fuel efficiency, and the trade-off increase in NOx under these conditions is then treated by the urea SCR. Nissan Diesel was the first in the world to succeed in practical application of this system, which it called the Final Low Emission New Diesel System (FLENDS). With this system, the new model Quon truck was able to meet the new long-term emissions regulations (2005) with a 10% improvement in fuel efficiency over the model that complied with the new short-term emissions regulations. The Quon was released one year before the regulations were enforced, and its reduced emissions contributed to improving the global environment. FLENDS was full of world-leading technologies including the device for adding the urea solution, the SCR catalyst, urea solution tank, piping with a defrosting heat insulation device, urea solution quality sensor, and the like. The system received the JSAE Technological Development Award in 2005.
