To cope with global emissions regulations, large amounts of precious metals were used for automotive catalysts, which had an enormous negative impact on other industries. Therefore, substantially reducing the use of precious metals became a pressing requirement. This intelligent catalyst provided a new technology to solve this problem. Coordination of precious metal ions in a crystal perovskite oxide provided the active function for self-regeneration in automotive exhaust gas. Because catalyst activity lasts indefinitely, the use of precious metals can be dramatically reduced. This catalyst provided an important technological solution for the entire automotive industry to save precious metal resources and help to protect the environment.

Points of interest, topicality:The concept of a permanent catalyst took a hint from Indian philosophy. It took 14 years to realize the applicable use of the world's first self-regeneration function. During the time, many people inside and outside the company cooperated in the development, and we appreciate the contribution made by our arch rival Honda for its catalyst development, which aroused our passion to put this system into practical use. The self-regeneration mechanism was unconventional in the catalyst academic society. Through joint research with the Japan Atomic Energy Agency, the mechanism was verified using the SPring-8 and synchrotron orbit radiation at ESRF in Europe. The research appeared in the British science magazine Nature. This catalyst received various awards including the Economy, Trade and Industry Minister's Award, the Minister Award of Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, the President's Award of the Science Council of Japan, the JSAE Technological Development Award, and the Environmental Excellence in Transportation (E2T).

Features:In this catalyst, precious metal ions are coordinated in crystal perovskite oxide. Whereas in conventional catalysts, precious metals are dispersed on the surface of a heat-resistant oxide such as alumina, in the super intelligent catalyst, the precious metals themselves form nanoparticles under a reduction atmosphere in coordination with fluctuations in oxidation-reduction of automotive exhaust gas. Under an oxidation atmosphere, it regenerates to perovskite oxide. This active function of self-regeneration keeps the catalyst active for a long period of time at a high level even after the use of the precious metals is substantially reduced.
