Points of interest, topicality:The technology for the system required more than 10 years to put into practical use after a number of ideas for detecting minute ionic current came and went. The system could be released thanks to the cooperation and encouragement from people inside and outside the company. The ionic current detection circuit, which is the core of the system, was an application of distributorless ignition. We appreciate again the cooperation from senior engineers in its practical application. The development of this system will be continued by expanding its scope through the utilization of direct engine combustion detection. The system received the RJC Technology of the Year 2004 Prize, the Prize for Promoting Machine Industry, and the Economy, Trade and Industry Minister's Award.

Features:The catalyst early activation system is a world-leading original and innovative technology developed by Daihatsu. The system detects combustion states in real time using ionic current, and uses this effect for treating exhaust gas on engine startup. Optimized combustion at engine startup allows early activation of the catalyst, thereby realizing exhaust gas reduction. The electronic circuit in the igniter detects an ionic current signal produced on combustion. This signal is used to diagnose the combustion state in the cylinder using an engine control computer. Based on the diagnosis result, the computer controls the ignition timing, and gas of higher temperature is sent to the catalyst to improve its treatment performance immediately after engine start.
