| Tokyo Gas and Electric was founded in 1910 to manufacture and sell various industrial products such as gas meters. In 1917, the company built a new plant in Omori to start manufacturing automobiles. At that time, the company was also importing, customizing, and selling Republic vehicles from the U.S., and it designed and manufactured the TGE-A cargo truck based on the Republic. The TGE-A was completed in 1917 and became Japan's first mass-produced truck. In 1918, the Military Vehicle Subsidy Law was enacted, and the TGE-A became the first approved subsidy vehicle under that law. As part of a policy to promote the domestic manufacture of military vehicles, the law established a system whereby subsidies were paid to the manufacturers and purchasers of vehicles that met military requirements. The brand name "TGE" was an abbreviation of the company's name. |
