The Canter features Mitsubishi Fuso's own parallel hybrid system. Integrating a compact motor/electric generator between a small displacement clean diesel engine and a mechanical automatic transmission, enables the efficient recovery of energy through a clutch during deceleration. The battery has high power and energy density, enabling reductions in size and mass. The system uses lithium ion batteries, which have long life and do not require regular replacement. The engine adopts a common rail system, high precision cooled EGR, and a continuously regenerating DPF.
Significant fuel efficiency and exhaust emissions improvements were realized, and its easy-to-drive performance reduces driving burden. In terms of environmental performance, it was the first Japanese small diesel truck to clear the world's most severe new long-term exhaust emissions regulations (2005).
