A simple and sturdy small truck, it made a major contribution to the transport of goods in the post-war period. A prototype XTM1 vehicle built in 1946 was named the "Mizushima," and successive improvements were made through eleven more prototypes until perfection was achieved in 1947 with the TM3, at which point full-scale production and sales began. Production of the vehicle, including passenger car and light van versions, continued until 1962, by which time a total of 91,050 units had been produced.
