| 50 cc scooters were mostly installed with 2-stroke engines. To respond to the growing social demand for environmental conservation from the mid 1990s, the Giorno Crea was developed utilizing the latest 4-stroke engine technology to realize a scooter focusing on both the environment and basic performance. It was the first application of a water-cooled 4-stroke 50cc engine to a mass-produced motorcycle in the world. Water cooling enhanced stable combustion, and combined with a secondary air intake device, the Giorno Crea achieved about half the level of the new emission control values for both CO and HC in Japan. In addition, it realized low fuel consumption of 61.4 km/L (at a constant speed at 30 km/h) and quietness. The Giorno Crea Deluxe used the first idling stop system in a mass-produced motorcycle, improving fuel efficiency by 5.1%. Although the body of most small scooters use welded steel tubes, the Giorno Crea used a longitudinally split type aluminum die cast frame. This contributed to a substantial reduction in energy at the production stage, and improved recyclability and production efficiency. |
