In 1992, Honda announced the β-method, which was a new analysis method to evaluate linear and non-linear vehicle dynamic performance based on direct yaw moment control (DYC). The concept was applied to the Active Torque Transfer System (ATTS), which distributes the torque driving force of a front wheel drive vehicle to the right and left, and was installed in the Honda Prelude in 1996. It was confirmed that directly controlling yaw moment by ATTS was effective for controlling changes in vehicle behavior when accelerating in turns and for improving turning limits. The SH-AWD is the world's first all-wheel drive torque control system and has been installed on Honda’s new models. It determines the optimal torque distribution to the front, rear, right, and left in accordance with driver operation and running conditions. It continuously controls the torque distribution to the front/rear and right/left from 30-70 to 70-30 and from 30-70 to 70-30, respectively. It extracts the maximum tire performance of each wheel in any driving condition, and utilizes the torque not only for acceleration but also for driving stability in turns. This enables the dynamic performance to be boosted to a higher level than ever before.
