The Z18 engine was a so-called fast burn engine that conformed to the emission gas regulations of 1978 and was capable of large EGR. The system was called NAPS-Z and could reduce NOx without sacrificing engine performance, and was capable of eliminating CO and HC in emissions in combination with an oxidation catalyst. The Z18 was an innovative engine with excellent combustion efficiency. It had a semispherical combustion chamber ideally suited for combustion, a cross flow type intake and exhaust system, and two spark plugs for each cylinder. The features of NAPS-Z were as follows. ・Good fuel economy and drivability with excellent combustion efficiency. ・Stable combustion even when recirculating large amounts of emission gases (NOx reduction). ・Good startability by using a dual ignition system. ・Relatively simple structure.

| Points of interest, topicality | : | This engine was developed under a large EGR + fast burn concept to conform to the Japanese emission gas regulations of 1978. As combustion noise caused by the fast burn was a technical issue, the design of this engine led to remarkable advances in noise reduction technical development. It received the JSME Award for technology that achieved the strict emission gas control values with a simple system. | |
