This was a new compressed natural gas multi-point injection (CNG MPI) engine that was developed and mounted in the 2005 Isuzu Elf. This engine was the first to conform to the new long-term regulations in Japan for CNG commercial vehicles, and obtained type approval from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

Introduction:The Isuzu Elf CNG vehicle was the top seller among CNG vehicles in Japan. Its new engine was further advanced by conformance with the new long-term regulations in April 2005, the achievement of ultra-low emissions performance, improved output torque, and reduced fuel consumption.
The new 4HV1 engine that used the MPI method for the fuel system precisely controlled fuel injection volume and injection timing using an injector laid out in each cylinder. The oxidation reduction performance of the three-way catalyst was maximized by creating the best combustion conditions through optimal electronic control of the air-fuel ratio. Consequently, NOx, HC, and CO emissions were minimized, and the Elf became the first CNG commercial vehicle to conform to the new long-term regulations (2003 CNG vehicle emission gas technical guidelines in) in Japan. It also realized the largest output and torque in its class while maintaining excellent fuel economy and quietness.
