|Many organizations such as ITS Japan and IIC (Internet ITS Consortium) have been working to promote the government-private sector joint research in telematics.
Automobile manufacturers use the communication system provided by mobile phones to link information centers with in-vehicle equipment in real time and provide services. The concrete details of the service are unique to the individual companies.
With the introduction of new navigation systems, the Internavi Premium Club information service was expanded to collect driving conditions from user vehicles on road where VICS information is not provided. By doing so, the Premium Members VICS floating car information service, which provides more detailed traffic congestion information, was established as the first such system in the world with a new car park selection function (September 18, 2003).
Additionally, VICS information by lane at interchanges of urban highways was also provided for the first time in the world. Internavi Weather, which provides the weather information necessary for the drive in real time is another world-first function interlocked with the car navigation system (October 6, 2004).
Another world first is the Departure Time Advisor service, which provides the recommended departure time that enables arrival at the destination at the expected time. It uses predicted real-time traffic congestion information, Internavi Floating Car System information and the like (May 24, 2005).

・The Car Park Selection function that automatically narrows down and points out available parking spaces is compatible with individual requests by setting conditions such as parking fees and opening hours.

・In conventional VICS information systems, information was provided as traffic congestion information even when only one lane is congested at an interchange of a highway with multiple lanes. However, in the Vehicle Lane Information System, driving data from members is used to enable provision of traffic congestion information by lane.
・After setting a destination, the Internavi Weather function displays traffic information and weather information (including that of rain or snow) that is necessary for driving in real time on the map.
・In the Departure Time Advisor system, current and accumulated VICS information and floating car information collected from members are used to provide prediction information for traffic congestion in real time including changes in traffic conditions up to 3 hours ahead. Beyond that, the shortest time route and the recommended departure time are provided using traffic information statistically calculated by date and time. This information is provided on a personal home page for Internet members. When there is a change in traffic conditions caused by incidents such as accidents and or road restrictions, information can be reported to any mobile phone address etc. by email prior to the departure time on the actual day.

・Using the Car Park Selection function, only car parks with available spaces are provided automatically according to the size of the vehicle. It is possible to provide only those car parks that satisfy conditions such as fees, distance to the destination and opening hours that are set in advance.
・The Traffic Congestion Prediction function enables changes in traffic conditions to be predicted precisely and routes provided that match the time to the destination. As a result, the driver can obtain optimal route information in which even changes in traffic conditions are foreseen, and a more precise predicted arrival time.
・The Vehicle Lane Information System informs the navigation system of the time required for each lane, which differs by direction after interchanges. As a result, the navigation system can show which lane has a smoother flow and a more precise predicted arrival time and effective route can be provided.
The Internavi Weather function enables traffic and weather information that is necessary for driving to be obtained (including rain or snow) and displayed on the map. More detailed support can be given to the driver for safety and peace of mind through alarms and warnings via text displays and the voice navigation system, as well as predicted route displays of the approach of typhoons.
・The Departure Time Advisor provides the fastest route and recommended departure times to members of the system. When changes to traffic conditions due to sudden events such as accidents and road restrictions, this can be reported to any email address, including mobile phones, prior to the departure time on the actual day. As a result, the optimal time and the route can be confirmed in advance and an effective driving plan can be created.

Using the original system that distributes the latest information, including that on traffic congestion prediction, it has been recognized for its user benefits marketing aspects by providing convenience and comfort for free (communication fee excluded).|

As for privacy protection, the monitored links are not continuous and does not enable identification of the driving route of members. In the course of processing into the necessary data, all personal information is excluded. The communication fee for transmission is assumed at the same time that Internavi VICS information is obtained, so it is possible to use the system with only small communication fees for communication connection. The Internavi Floating Car information is also only provided to members who are supplied with driving information, which generates a give and take relationship.

When members' vehicles run on road sections set in advance, the required driving time is uploaded to the center and provided only to other members. Regular VICS information can be used for effective route navigation even on roads where the required time is not provided.
・Car Park Selection
The vehicle size is automatically recognized and only car parks where the vehicle can enter is selected by the navigation system. Furthermore, by setting the distance to the destination and the opening hours in advance, only car parks that meet those conditions are displayed.
・Traffic Congestion Prediction
Based on the accumulated traffic congestion data, changes in conditions are predicted with high precision. It is possible to accurately see which lane is flowing smoothly and which direction at interchanges is quicker, thereby allowing more precisely predicted arrival times and effective routes.
When traffic information is obtained from the Internavi VICS, weather information up to the destination is simultaneously provided, which enables information on areas with warning signs for typhoons, heavy rain, thunderstorms, tsunamis etc. The weather conditions around the present location, on the road, and around the destination can be overlaid on the map and audio warnings can be given when the vehicle enters a weather advisory area.
・Departure Time Advisor
Based on previous VICS information and the floating car information, the recommended departure time and route on the actual departure date are predicted and provided. When there is a change in traffic conditions due to a sudden incident such as traffic congestion caused by accidents, or road restrictions, such information is reported to any email address, including mobile phones, prior to the departure time.
