・ The world's first 4-wheel steering (4WS) system that actively steered the rear wheels.
・The structure caused displacement of the cross member instead of the tire using a hydraulic actuator within the elasticity range of the rubber mount.
・This was a sports 4WS system that detected lateral G while cornering, and enabled same-phase steering up to 0.5 degrees by electronic control.

Structure, type, means, method, etc.:A small hydraulic actuator was set on the left-right fulcrum (rubber mount portion) of the cross member attached to the rear semi-trailing arm to cause displacement of the rear wheels by a minute angle in the same phase by electronic control. This was the world's first rear wheel active steering mechanism.
Because of its emphasis on sports applications, an opposite phase steering mechanism for low speeds was not adopted.
dot
Function, effect, etc.:When driving at 30 km/h or more, the rear wheels could be steered by up to 0.5 degrees according to the vehicle speed and lateral G in order to improve stability. In particular, it greatly improved the safety margin for cornering at high speeds.
dot
Technical overview:A slight understeer characteristic allowed the driver to corner at will, and stable lane change characteristics were achieved.
dot
Points of interest, topicality:The first commercialized 4-wheel active steering system for passenger cars in the world. It was later developed into the Super HICAS, which also enabled opposite phase steering.
dot
Features:Sports 4WS system capable of same-phase minute angle control.
